Birdwood ‘En Plein Air‘

Story ThumbnailRecently formed, a small number of artists have been gathering on a fortnightly basis to nurture their skills with the challenge of painting on site.

We will recommence in 2007 once the school year has resumed, meeting on Thursday, February 8th.

Fortnightly morning gatherings will alternate Fridays and Thursdays, allowing a choice for people limited with their time.

Meeting in and around Birdwood, we hope to provide opportunity for local artists to challenge themselves and get to know like minded people.

Battling the flies, wind, heat and whatever the elements throw at you does not make for the ultimate in comfort, but the satisfaction of having tried and lasted is worth it.

Outdoor painting can be a stand alone activity or in conjunction with painting done in the relative comfort of one’s own studio (or wherever it is that you do paint because you are still wishing for a studio!)

The idea is to find some great nooks and crannies or open spaces and views in our area that are just calling out to be painted.
We are sure that there must be some great tumble down cottages, renovated cottages, irresistible views, old sheds and machinery and the like hiding away that would be great for us to paint. Ideally we need a shaded area to paint from, and enough space to park a few cars. Easy car access or a short walk is good for those less nimble of foot.

Previous outdoor experience is not necessary, but painters should be aware that there is not expected to be any tuition involved. Artists can work in their own medium and converse and share as much or as little as desired. No cost is involved for participants, and input can be limited to just turning up or suggesting a painting venue.

Enquiries are most welcome from those who may like to join in, and also from people who have a suggestion of a place that we may like to meet. For those who are interested in painting but prefer not to face the elements there are some vacancies in watercolour classes for 2007 with Christine Murphy. Contact Christine at Murphy Framing on 8568 5137 to find out more about the outdoor painting or classes. (Please leave a message if the phone is unattended – I may be out painting!)
